Living in the Backyard

Gracefully Aging in Place

“Aging in Place”  is a significant motivation for many to invest in a DADU.  Aging in place is a trending topic because it blows up conventional thinking about life through the Golden  Years. For example, many people who build backyard cottages are between 30 and 60 yrs old and visualize an ideal, close by, living situation for their downsizing parents.

In our world, DADU means Detached Accessory Dwelling Unit, and interestingly, Dadus is a term commonly used in Indian culture to refer to grandparents, particularly grandfathers. In many cultures worldwide, grandparents hold a special place in the family and are highly respected for their life experiences and wisdom.

So perhaps it is in the stars to build a  DADU for your kids’ Dadus.  However, there are also many practical reasons to consider. Our conversations around the topic typically hit on these 6 points:

Emotional and Social Support: By living with you, your parents can regularly interact with family members. They may feel less lonely and isolated than if they were living alone. They can also receive emotional support from you and other family members, which can be especially important as they age.

Health Care and Assistance: If your parents have any medical conditions or need assistance with daily tasks, having them live with you can make it easier for you to help them. You can ensure they are taking their medications, help them with their mobility, and ensure they receive prompt medical care if needed.

Cost Savings: To both you and your parents. Creating a community with your parents means any payment they make towards their cost of living can go towards the family’s property, not a landlord or retirement community.

Family Bonding: Living together can help strengthen family bonds and provide opportunities for shared experiences and memories. It can also create opportunities for multigenerational learning and growth.

Peace of Mind: Knowing that your parents are safe and well-cared for can give you peace of mind, especially if they were previously living alone or in a situation where you were concerned about their wellbeing.

Overall, a DADU is a great way to improve the lifestyle of your entire family. However, it is essential to consider the potential challenges, such as the impact on your privacy and the need to balance caregiving responsibilities with other obligations. In addition, communicating openly with your parents and other family members about expectations and boundaries is essential to ensure a positive and healthy living situation for everyone involved.
